Chula Vista became the first community in California to be certified as a 'Welcoming City' for immigrants and refugees in 2019, but it allowed that coveted designation to lapse last year, much to the dismay of many in the city. Now it's hoping to regain that stature. The City Council on Tuesday voted 4-1 to pursue recertification, a rigorous process that involves proving it is an inclusive place that promotes equal access to community services. 'This confirms to our residents that the city is actively pursuing their interests, actively accommodating and including them in civic life,' said Deputy Mayor Jose Preciado.
