Democrat Steve Padilla was sworn into the California Senate Monday, joining a diverse legislative body with historic Latino and LGBTQ representation. The ceremony, held at the Capitol in Sacramento, established him as the representative of the 18th District. He was joined by 18 others who took the oath of office, including Catherine Blakespear, former mayor of Encinitas who now represents the 38th District.Padilla, a former Chula Vista council member, will serve a four-year term representing the newly drawn district that encompasses southern communities in San Diego County, and Imperial, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
